How To Spot Green Hotels

How To Spot Green HotelsWhen going on holiday, it might be important to you that you’re able to stay as environmentally friendly as possible. You can do this by ensuring that you choose a hotel which follows green practices. This is a great way to keep your impact on the environment as low as possible, even while relaxing on a beach many miles from home.

Look For Alternative Energy

One of the ways to spot a green hotel is by examining the kind of energy that they use. If they have a solar panel heating their pool, for example, this is a great sign. It means that they care about finding energy from alternative sources, rather than using fossil fuels. Other sources of alternative energy they can use are small wind turbines, wave turbines which collect energy from the ocean, and so on. Few hotels around the world are totally self-sustained, but those which are can be the most eco-friendly stays you will ever get to experience.

Check The Hiring Policies

Many hotels will have a recruitment section where you can see what they pay their staff. Hiring policies are about more than just human rights. They can also give you an idea of how the hotel operates: do they value money over being a good employer? If so, then they likely value money over being good for the environment, too. You should also see whether they recruit locals or hire from abroad as this is another important point. Helping the local community to flourish is important for preserving good environmental policies.

Find The Food Sources

What kind of food can you eat in the hotel restaurant? If they use locally sourced foods farmed from sustainable sources, then you are onto a winner. Note that hotels which do not state anything about their sources probably don’t have anything to be proud of! When food is source locally and sustainably, it is so much better for the environment. Food which has to be shipped out over thousands of miles, or is taken from a source which will soon die out, is not the right way to go. If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet because of the impact of meat eating on the environment, then you will also need to check whether your dietary needs will be supported.

See The Sustainability Practices

Most hotels these days have greener policies in place, which you can check out ahead of time. If there is no information on their website, you can always call or email to ask. Some standard practices which you might see include only washing towels if you leave them on the floor for the housekeeper to pick up, having lights which turn off automatically if the key is not placed in a switch, and having the heating switched off until you turn it on yourself. These are all good signs that your hotel has the environment in mind.

Try Recycling

This might not be something that you can fully check until you are in the hotel itself, but at least you can see it as a good sign. If your hotel room does not include a recycling bin, ask if there is somewhere you can put your cardboard, plastic, or food waste. Hopefully, if you have chosen a green hotel, a member of staff will be able to help you out!

There are many ways you can help the environment, and choosing only to stay in green hotels is definitely one of them. It helps the corporations behind them to understand that green hotels make more money, and will encourage them to open more.
