Mauritius is a popular holiday destination, and it is not hard to see why. This volcanic island nation in the Indian Ocean benefits from year-round warmth and its beaches provide the perfect setting for vacationers to relax and unwind. If you’re planning a trip to Mauritius, you’ll no doubt be keen to find the best coastal spots. The good news is, you’ll have plenty to choose from. The country benefits from more than 160 kilometres of sandy shoreline. In addition, all beaches on the island are public and they benefit from parking areas and toilets.
It’s worth noting that the greatest concentration of beaches on Mauritius can be found in the north, while the east boasts the most picturesque and sought-after white sand beaches. Meanwhile, the country’s west coast offers golden sands and shallow water, and you can catch spectacular sunsets there. For a livelier ocean, it’s worth checking out the south.
If it’s water sports you’re after, head to the Grand Baie in the north. While this is too crowded with boats for swimming, it’s a great location to test your skills with a range of aqua-based activities. You can also enjoy the local bars, clubs and restaurants.
On the island’s east coast, the Ile aux Cerfs is one to visit. It benefits from talcum-white sand and clear waters, and if you fancy frolicking in the sun there, you can book yourself in for everything from banana boat rides to parasailing excursions.
Still in eastern Mauritius, but further down the coastline, the Blue Bay is an idyllic spot. A protected marine park, it has the island’s most interesting and beautiful underwater scenery. To explore the ocean floor, you can arrange to go on a glass bottomed boat trip or an organised snorkelling tour. This stretch of coastline is also easily accessed from the airport in the south-east. It is only a 10-minute drive from the hub.
These are just three of the island’s most prized beaches. There are plenty more, meaning you will be spoiled for choice. Just remember to pack plenty of swimwear and sunscreen when you set off on holidays to Mauritius!
