If you’re a die-hard motorbike fan, you’re probably bored of travelling the same routes all the time. Why not venture further afield and explore some of the famous motorcycle routes? From the bumpy and winding Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina to the isolated Seward Highway in Alaska, these motorcycle roads are bound to get your adrenaline pumping. If you’re looking for new challenge, here are some of the most exhilarating motorcycle rides around the world:
Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock, North Carolina, United States
This route spans 120 miles and attracts motorcycle enthusiasts all year round. Watch out for the sudden dips and steep hills, and don’t miss the spectacular views from Mile High Swinging Bridge. You can check out some of the area’s specific routes here.
Tail of the Dragon at Deals Cap, United States
Tail of the Dragon at Deals Cap is situated just between North Carolina and Tennessee. It is one of the most popular roads for motorcyclists in the US. It has 318 curves and plenty of hills, and is located right next to the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest. As the area is desolate, you won’t have to worry about any traffic interrupting your journey – however, do remain vigilant for the bears, deer and wild boars that roam the area.
The Amalfi Coast, Italy
For a really unique and scenic route, head to the Amalfi coast in Italy. Follow the winding Strada Statale 163 from Sorrento to Amalfi. This trip may only be 31.2km long, but its rocky and narrow road and close proximity to the sea makes it a truly nerve-wracking experience for even the most qualified motorcyclists. The best time of year for this route is either between September and November or April / May, when there are less tourists in the area.
North Yungas Road, Bolivia
North Yungas Road is also known as ‘Death Road’, and it’s clear why. It has been estimated that around 200 people die on this route each year. If you’re brave enough to attempt this route, try to stay clear from December to March, as the rain can make the road even more hazardous. North Yungas Road starts in La Paz and ends in Coroico, Yungas, passing through the rainforest and mountains that reach up to 4,650m.
Seward Highway, Alaska
Seward Highway is one of the most secluded roads in North America. You won’t find many people here. Instead, Seward Highway offers waterfalls, lakes and glaciers that are well worth bringing your camera for. Stop off at Bird Creek to see if you can spot the Steller sea lion and silver salmon. If you’re planning to stay for a few days, be sure to explore the Chugach State Park and Girdwood, which is full of wildflowers in summer. To find out more about this route, head to National Geographic.
